INTERVIEW WITH YUVI ALPERT
by David Gargiulo Photos Kevin Sinclair

In our effort to give you always the hottest new designers on the market this month Vestal met with Yuvi Alpert co-founder with Danna Kobo of the high-end jewelry line Ruby Kobo. Yuvi and Danna created Ruby Kobo three years ago and in this short time the two artists have already placed themselves under the media light. Ruby Kobo is one of the winners of the CFDA fashion incubator program. A prestigious program that every two years selects 12 promising new designers in New York City to help them grow and become the future of fashion.

The line is also gaining recognition among celebrities; Ruby Kobo has been seen worn by first lady Michelle Obama, actresses Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts, singers Rihanna, Kanye West, and Lionel Richie to mention a few.
Yuvi told us that he found his passion for jewelry design at the age of 18: “Before I started design jewelry I was studying international finance and I got into jewelry to do something for a girl”.

Once finished with college, Yuvi traveled through Nepal, India, Thailand, in a long and inspiring journey that ended in London. Back to the US he met Danna in Miami and they clicked as a creative team. That same year they decided to start Ruby Kobo and open a studio in New York City. This business partnership turned out to be blessed and the two designers have been creating marvels in their studio. Their different backgrounds enrich their art. Danna grew between New York City and Honk Kong whereas Yuvi is originally from California and Tel Aviv. Danna's passion for elegant gemstones and jewels complements exquisitely with Yuvi's love for natural materials. This dual effect creates a sublime contrast of casual and elegant that makes their style so unique and distinctive. This pleasant balance allows their jewelry to be worn day and night giving you that expensive but never pretentious look.

The duo is constantly on the lookout for new materials that can be embedded in their innovative design. “Materials are from all over. A lot of the beads come from Indonesia, Nepal, or India. We also found some great beads in Arizona so we constantly source different beads from all around. The diamonds come from Jaipur, the pearls from Tahiti, the chains from Italy, the deer antlers and the shed elks from Montana. We are only using the best materials.” says Yuvi.

Every piece is unique because it is handcrafted by Ruby Kobo skilled team. Yuvi explains “Everything is handcrafted in LA, NY, Jaipur, Bangkok or in the area where they do the best job on that particular piece. For instance NY will make the mold of a piece and then ship it off to Jaipur where it is hand carved by local artisans. Then the piece will come back to NY and we finish it by hand.” Yuvi continues “It is all about craftsmanship. We are very attentive to details.” and he showed us the pave Hamsa hand, a beautiful necklace shaped like a hand made with 14K gold and 61 diamonds. He flips the Hamsa hand to show us the back and we were impressed by the amount of detailing. We could see the lines and the carves between the knuckles of the fingers. Very fascinating!

While we were scanning through the jewelry we noticed that many of the pieces refer to mystic symbols, thus we asked Yuvi what is his inspiration. He said that he gets a lot of inspiration during his journeys. “If I see any idea of patterns or something incredible I would find myself with a pen in my hand and start sketching” Yuvi tells us passionately. “For example our first collection was inspired by Nepal. Lots of inspiration comes from Tibet and India as well. Especially India; I spent a month in India. In Jaipur, I met with the artisans that carefully handcraft our pieces. It was an amazing experience! In India I got inspired to use Tulsi wood[1], beads and clay. I was impressed by their work with clay so we decided to incorporate it with 24 K gold and white diamonds to get a stunning effect. We sliced the diamonds in thin foils and add the slices to the clay”.

Other symbols borrowed from Asian culture that we noticed are Tibetan masks that carry different meaning such as luck, love, or the transitory nature of our existence and the Hamsa hand that is a protection against the evil eye.
