Kevin Sinclair __ Emily, you’ve had an impressive journey in the modeling world, working with iconic brands like Zara, Louis Vuitton, Dsquared2, Chanel, and prominent fashion magazines. Can you share your most memorable experience as a model from your early days?

Emily Miller __ It was when I was getting my makeup and hair done at Louis Vuitton; I was so terrified. I was supposed to be number eleven during the show, and the designer comes with the casting director, and they're like, um, you're going to open our show. This was my very first job, my very first show. My heart was pounding so fast that everything after that job was easy. I was never scared to do anything again.

KS __ Where was the show?

EM __ It was in Paris. It was so sick, and once the show was over, they sent Selena Gomez the shirt I wore.

KS __ Get the fuck out.

EM __ Oh, yes, it's true. Also, shooting with Collier Schorr, we were talking and she ended up putting a lot of our conversations bordered around the editorial, as she tends to do. Like, artistic expressions in her photos, which is cool.

KS __ Was there a particular moment or inspiration that made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in modeling?

EM __ Other than my first paycheck [ laughs]. When I first signed up with my agency, I told my agent I was not wearing makeup; I was not going to wear dresses; I was not wearing heels nor skirts, or anything feminine because I wanted to make a statement that you don't have to wear those things just because you're a girl, I needed to believe in my truth. I was that person and could still do the coolest shit. Clothes don't have a gender; you should express your style however you feel. Although I am hyper-masculine, I have a feminine side within me. I can wear dresses and makeup when I feel girly for that moment. I have both worlds and like to express that side when I want to.

KS __ Have you encountered any models with a similar interest?

Top PAURA DI DANILO PAURA, skirt MELBOSTAD.

EM __ Not really. Maybe because I am so focused on the job, but unfortunately, I've never met a model with that similar vibe.

KS __ What drove the idea of you wanting to step into acting?

EM __ Casting director David Rapaport started following me on Instagram. After that, I started thinking about it heavily; I believe he cast Ruby Rose for Batwoman.

KS __ I love Ruby. She's amazing.

EM __ I'd be such a badass in an action. I don't watch a ton of movies, but I like The Notebook and Pretty Woman; I am such a soft person. I love romance movies. I had an eleven-and-a-half-hour flight to Paris two weeks ago and sobbed while watching The Notebook on the airplane. And everyone was staring at me. I am a hopeless romantic.

KS __ Are you afraid to be hurt?

EM __ It terrifies me. I got my heart broken when I was 17. I didn't date again for three and a half years after that.

KS __ Oh, man. Mmmm. Opening up and loving someone is a beautiful thing, you know, you go through so many different stages in life and meet so many other people and get hurt, but it only makes you stronger.

EM __ It's true.

KS __ What roles do you hope to take on as you embark on this new acting journey? Is there a dream role you’ve always had in mind? I know you mentioned action.

EM __ That is a good question. I am so versatile with my day-to-day approaches. Can't you tell? [laughs] I am open to anything that allows me to express myself artistically. I love being in front of the camera, whether shooting for an editorial or creating content. I am all about self-expression and want to show the world what I got on the big or small screen.

KS __ You’ve collaborated with renowned fashion houses and photographers throughout your short career. Is there a particular shoot or campaign that stands out as a turning point for you?

EM __ My very first job was on the cover of Italian Vogue. After I signed with my agency, I had to go straight to New York. At the time, I was living in Virginia.

KS __ And what was the feeling like?

“I'd be such a badass in an action [movie].”

Shirt MELBOSTAD, vintage jacket available at GOOD NEWS ONLY.

EM __ At first, I asked my agents, is this a good editorial? I didn't know what it was. I knew nothing about fashion. And they said this is the best thing you can ever do.

KS __ Wait a minute. You had no idea about Vogue magazines? Have you ever opened up a magazine to see the models inside and stuff like that?

EM __ No, still to this day, I love shooting for these publications, of course, but for me, it's a job, and I want to do it well. I don't need to soak in it. I love fashion, don't get me wrong, but I also have other interests.

KS __ I love that. Tell me more; what did you do after the shoot wrapped up?

EM __ After that shoot, I walked out front, and black cars lined up everywhere. And I was with my social media manager, Tim; he's family to me. It's so funny that Bella Hadid was shooting the cover too, and I didn't even know who she was. And Tim goes, oh my God, that was Bella Hadid. And I'm like, who's Bella Hadid?

KS __ He must have been like, what the fuck.

EM __ Oh yeah, I knew little at the time about fashion. I was always into sports; you know, nothing about fashion. I didn't even watch TV when I was a kid. I was always active doing something physical and into school.

KS __ You are authentic. You shine through without even realizing it; you know that? So, how did you get discovered?

EM __ TikTok. I was bored. Everything was shut down because of Covid, so I joined TikTok. I got a hundred thousand followers in a couple of months, and then I just happened to land on a modeling scouts page, and they wanted to sign me. My mom was terrified they would try to make me lose weight, but they didn't care. They just wanted me to be myself.

KS __ So what videos were you putting on TikTok?

EM __ It's so embarrassing. I need to return and delete them because if anybody finds them, I'm toast [laughs].

KS __ Oh, come on. I'm sure it's cute.

EM __ It was to me at the time. I was playing around, dancing, and being a douchebag just because it gained me followers.

KS __ And look at you now. [laughs] What do you do to keep yourself so grounded?

EM __ I like to have fun meeting new and interesting people, and LA has a lot of those. I also enjoy time alone, putting ideas down on paper, and reflecting. Modeling used to be stressful, but only if you let it be. It does not stress me out anymore. What stresses me out is the twelve-hour flight to Paris [laughs].

KS __ Do you meditate?

EM __ I don't. But if I have trouble sleeping at night. I would put on meditation music. That's about it, though; I don't know how to meditate. I listen to music and sit on the beach reading a book. That's a form of therapy.

KS __ Do you go to the gym?

EM __ Um, no.

KS __ So this is all-natural. [gesturing]

EM __ It's funny because people on Instagram would DM me asking about my workout routine. I'm like; I don't have one. I wish I had one for you and they would think I am lying. I played basketball for ten years. I played soccer for eleven years, did martial arts, and ran track for four years in high school. And I'm always just out and about.

Tank top and jacket MELBOSTAD, pants PERSONAL/OWN.

KS __ What aspects of photography and modeling do you enjoy the most during a shoot?

EM __Aw man, I love that question. Music is a big part of my life. I transform whenever I am on set; different music changes me. The rhythm allows my body to move naturally, which helps me get some fantastic dope images that will come across naturally. I feel the music, and that's it.

KS __ That’s awesome.

EM __ I don't try to stage things. I do not need a lot of direction, mainly because I want to bring out my true self, and I wish to collaborate on this message and see where my photographer and I can take it.

KS __ That's what makes you so unique.

EM __ Thank you.

KS __ As the editor-in-chief, I’m thrilled to see your interview featured in our magazine. Is there a role model or figure in the industry whose career trajectory you admire and draw inspiration from?

EM __ My mom, she's my window. She's the coolest person I know. She's just the most genuine, authentic soul you can meet. She would never judge you. She is a pure person in every sense of the word. She's loyal and kind and wants everyone to be happy. I have friends that literally text my mom because they didn't have a good relationship with their mom. And I'm like; I can share her too. She's your mom too. She's the coolest.

KS __ How about your dad? Is he a part of your life?

EM __ No, I don't talk to my dad. He texted me when I was in Paris recently, and he's just so passive-aggressive. I didn't even open the message because he's not a priority.

KS __ Could you describe the role he has played in your life?

EM __ Not much. Since my parents were separated as a kid, I had to spend time with him on the weekends. I used to come home crying, my weekends wasted. He even lived in the same town as me, literally a five-minute drive from me and my mom, and never took me to get ice cream or pick me up. He doesn't get the label of my dad. That's not love. You could put this in the interview because I want him to hear how much of a piece of shit he is.

KS __ So I wanna ask you, um, how did you come out to your mom?

EM __ She knew already. My mom had this whole thing, like, why do I have such a beautiful daughter who's athletic and intelligent, gets along with everyone, and doesn't have a boyfriend? The boys loved me. I didn't like them, though. I knew I was gay when I was twelve. I knew because I had the biggest crush on my third-grade teacher. I used to go back and visit her for years. She was nurturing. That's precisely why I like women. Not to say men can not be sensitive, but It's just more common in women. I came out to my mom as bisexual because I didn't know how she would react; even though deep inside I think I knew she wouldn't care. And she was like, "I already knew." She's so great. She never cared about my sexual orientation. I had my girlfriend come and sleep over whenever. We joked that at least I won't get pregnant [laughs]. She just wanted me to be happy. Oh, and she's a Virgo.

KS __ You're so strong. And your mother sounds like a very smart, loving woman. Thank you for sharing that. [Pause] Okay, and what sign are you?

EM __ I'm a Libra.

KS __ You're a Libra. I'm a Scorpio.

EM __ That's scary.

KS __ A lot of people say that, but my sting has been removed. I'm the type of person that I like to give second chances. I will give a third chance. But after that, no mo'.

EM __ I know what you mean. I just recently had a breakup with someone I was madly into. It's been challenging because I love this girl so much. And chances are what I am holding on to right now. She's on my mind day and night, but I must let the stars align when needed.

KS __ On your journey, you have learned valuable lessons along the way. If you could advise your younger self or aspiring models, what would it be?

EM __ Learning how to be alone and being comfortable with being uncomfortable. Those two things were the hardest thing for me to master in the beginning. Like, being alone is so fucking hard, especially when you're in new places all the time. Also, If you are part of the LGBTQ+ community or an androgynous model like me, please stay true to yourself. Everything in life is a choice; it won't ruin your career. Stay true to yourself.

KS __ I am excited for you, Emily, and this new venture into acting alongside your modeling career is a significant step in the right direction. I have a feeling you love seeing yourself transformed.

EM __ I do.

KS __ Believe me, you're gonna be transformed left to right and center. And that's the beauty about acting. It’s how you can project those pain, experiences and emotions onto film.

EM __ I can get with that!

KS __ Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations for the future, both in modeling and acting and how do you envision your impact on the industry?

EM __ My goal in modeling and acting is to be as successful and well-known as possible. Kevin, it's so important for me to represent my community. And with acting, I wanna be a badass. I want the world to know how cool I am and how gay girls and boys can be that too. And I want to be a great role model and make my mom proud. That's the only reason I started modeling to show that there's another side, not just a pretty face.

KS __ Beautifully said. Are you hungry? Do you wanna order some food?

EM __ Let's, do it!
